Jeanette (Jane) Smith

Born on February 3, 1844 in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, Jeanette Smith is the second child of Thomas Smith, Jr. and Rose (Getty) Smith. Jeanette emigrated to the United States in 1850 with her parents and several siblings.

Jeanette married first to John Nevin (born about 1837 in Ireland) on August 16, 1860 in St. Clair County, Illinois. She also uses the name Jane in various records. Jane and John had 3 known children:
  • Robert John - born in 1863 in St. Clair County, Illinois, died in 1916 in St. Clair County. Married Nettie Finney Aitken on November 1, 1888 in Randolph County, Illinois.
  • William Joseph - born August 20, 1872 in St. Clair County, Illinois, died September 1, 1942. Married Helen Rebecca Crawford on December 7, 1898. Information on William is from family sources.
  • Charles Samuel - born October 3, 1876 in St. Clair County, Illinois, died January 28, 1950 in Red Bud, Illinois.
John Nevin died between 1876-1878, presumably in Illinois. I do not know where he is buried.

After his death Jane married Joseph Craig on March 23, 1878 in Randolph County, Illinois. Jane and Joseph had 2 known children:
  • Mary R. - born July 19, 1882 in Illinois, died March 8, 1908 in St. Clair County, Illinois. She married Clarence Calvin Folden on October 31, 1900 in St. Clair County.
  • Bertha Ann - born November 1889 in Illinois, died October 24, 1960. Married Frank Monds about 1920, probably in Illinois as they were living in St. Clair County in the 1930 census.
Joseph Craig died October 16, 1912 in St. Clair County, Illinois. Jane died August 3, 1922 in Marissa, St. Clair County. Both are buried in the Marissa Cemetery.

Nancy Smith

Nancy Smith, firstborn child of Thomas Smith, Jr. and Rose (Getty), was born in April 1843 in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. When Nancy was 7 years old her family emigrated from Ireland to the United States on the British ship Thomas Fielden. They left from Liverpool and arrived at the Port of New Orleans, District of Mississippi, on February 7, 1851. The family continued on to Illinois where they settled in St. Clair County.

On September 6, 1866, Nancy married James W. Green in St. Clair County, Illinois. James was a farmer until his death on March 27, 1877. Nancy and James had 4 known children:
  • Anna J. - born September 28, 1867 in St. Clair County, Illinois; died May 30, 1922, Union County, Illinois. Married Nathan Alexander Evans December 3, 1891 in St. Clair County. Buried in Marissa Cemetery.
  • Sara Elizabeth - born September 13, 1869 and died August 26, 1876 in St. Clair County, Illinois. Buried in Marissa Cemetery.
  • George Theron - born August 1872 in St. Clair County, died 1916. Married Margaret J. Burgadhing on February 1, 1893 in St. Clair County. Buried in Marissa Cemetery.
  • Mary Abbey - born about November 1876 and died about June 12, 1877 in St. Clair County, Illinois. Buried in Marissa Cemetery.
After James Green's death, Nancy married about 1880 to a Mr. Hendron (first name unknown). I could find no record of the place of this marriage; however, the 1900 census gives her name as Nancy Hendron with number of years of present marriage as 20. Also the name on her burial record is listed as Nancy Green Hendron.

Nancy (Smith) Green Hendron died on August 3, 1904 in St. Clair County, Illinois. Both Nancy and James are buried in Marissa Cemetery, in Section A, Lot 36.

Woodside-Smith Connections

My great grandfather, William Steward Woodside, married Rose Ann Lyons Smith daughter of Thomas Smith, Jr. and Mary Lyons. Previously I did postings on these ancestors and you can find them by clicking on the "Labels" for Woodside and Smith.

I have decided to now do a group of postings covering the rest of Thomas Smith, Jr.'s children, as well as any Lyons family information I have, before continuing with the next generation of Woodside.

If anyone has any information to add for my postings, including pictures of persons or tombstones, please let me know by emailing me through the "About Me" section. I always enjoy meeting new cousins.
