Family and Christmas

Looking for a new idea or theme for decorating your tree and home this year? How about one based on family? Here are a few ideas for making ornaments:

Gather or print out your favorite family photos and create mini frames for them using recycled holiday cards and gift wrap. Accent the frames with glitter, sequins and beads to make them sparkle.

Buy some of those mini picture frames that are sold at craft stores, and other places. Use your printer to make copies of your photos and cut them to fit in the frames. Be sure to include older pictures so family and friends can have fun guessing who is in the picture.

Maybe you have some of those clear glass balls for your tree. If not you can buy a dozen at a reasonable price in discount stores. Copy your photos, then roll one up small enough to fit into the opening at the top of the ball (after removing the hanger), put the photo through the opening and it will gradually unroll inside the ball.

You will have some pretty unique ornaments. Plus you don't have to be real fussy about doing these. Other family members might enjoy helping and you will have started a new Christmas tradition. Have fun with it.

Merry Christmas, everyone. Enjoy your family.

Coulterville Cemetery, Randolph County, Illinois

The following tombstones for John J. and Nancy F. Woodside, and two of their children, are located in the Coulterville Cemetery. The photo at the left is an overview of the section containing the four stones.

John Woodside
Born June 5, 1782
Died Dec. 29, 1855

The lower half of this stone is quite worn and hard to read, but I believe the above dates are correct.

Nancy F.
Wife of John Woodside
Born Apr. 2, 1796
Died Nov. 29, 1869

Robt. P. Woodside
Born Sep. 26, 1838
Died Jan. 31, 1864

There is a rifle at the top of the stone. At the bottom I was only able to read Co. F. However, Randolph County Cemetery Records states Co. F 10 MO Inf-CW.

Josiah K. Woodside
Born Aug. 1, 1835
Died May 30, 1898

[All census records give this son's name as Joshua K.]

You can find other Woodside family stones on my cemetery and gravestone photos blog.

Nancy F. Woodside

Born in November 1824 in Kentucky, Nancy was the 5th child of John J. and Nancy F. (Hamilton) Woodside.

Nancy married "James Moon of the City of Detroit State of Michigan" on July 13, 1858 in St. Louis County, Missouri. The marriage was performed by Philip McDonald, Justice of the Peace. Nancy and James had 3 children:
  • James - born 1859 in Missouri
  • Joshua H. - born December 1861 in Illinois
  • William - born about 1863 in Missouri
Nothing more is known about the children at this time. However, Joshua apparently was married since he is listed as a widow in the 1900 U.S. Census for Iron County, Missouri.

Nancy is living with son Joshua on the 1900 Census and is listed as a widow, so her husband James died sometime after the 1880 Census but before the 1900 Census. It is not known when Nancy died; she was 75 in 1900 and probably did not live much longer than that.

Elizabeth A. Woodside

Elizabeth was the 4th daughter of John J. and Nancy F. (Hamilton) Woodside. She was born about 1823 in Kentucky, where she married Hiram G. Wilson on February 10, 1847 in Crittenden County. Elizabeth and Hiram had one known child:
  • David K. - born October 16, 1847 in Kentucky and died December 10, 1885 in Cherokee County, Kansas. Married to Samantha E. B. Carlock, daughter of Joseph A. and Margaret A. (Hurley) Carlock, on January 7, 1870 in Neoshoks County, Kansas.
Hiram died on December 19, 1865 in Perry County, Illinois according to family sources. Hiram, Elizabeth and David are found on the 1860 U.S. Census for Perry County, and Hiram and family are found on the 1865 Illinois State Census in Perry County. Then Elizabeth is found living alone in the 1870 U.S. Census for Neosho County, Kansas, with son David living nearby. So it would appear that the death of Hiram is probably correct.

I could not locate Elizabeth on the 1880 or 1900 census - she is not listed with her son and his family. There is a marriage for an Elizabeth A. Wilson to Charles L. Dameron in 1872 listed in the Illinois Statewide Marriage Index. However, I do not know if this is the same Elizabeth since I have not sent for a copy of the marriage record.

At this time, I can only state that Elizabeth (Woodside) Wilson died sometime after the 1870 census mentioned above. Would love to hear from anyone who has further verified information on Elizabeth.

Lavinia C. Woodside

Lavinia was born about 1818 in Kentucky to John J. and Nancy F. (Hamilton) Woodside.

I have not been able to find much information about Lavinia on any on-line databases. Ancestry World Tree indicates Lavinia married a Samuel B. Hamilton in June 1842, in Crittenden County, Kentucky. However, I have not yet found a record of this marriage. Nor do I know if she had any children.

She is listed on the 1880 U.S. Census for Perry County, Illinois, in Grand Cote, as L. Hamilton age 62, living with her sister M. M. Maxwell (this is Martha Malinda) and Martha's daughter, Mary. Both Martha and Lavinia are listed as Widows.

There is a Mrs. L. Hamilton, age 53, listed on the 1870 Census for Ohio County, Kentucky as well as a Luisa/Louisa Hamilton, Widow, age 43, on the 1860 Census with children. She is also on the 1850 Census with a Samuel Hamilton, age 37. However, this is NOT the correct family as the youngest child is a Peyton T. Hamilton and I did locate a Kentucky birth record for him in Ancentry's database, which shows his mother's maiden name as Crow.

If anyone has any actual sources for any information on Lavinia and her marriage, children, death, etc. I would very much appreciate hearing from you. I really need help with this one.

Martha Malinda Woodside

Martha Malinda is found in various records alternately as Martha, Martha M., or Malinda. She was born in November of 1820, in Kentucky, to parents John J. and Nancy F. (Hamilton) Woodside.

On May 12, 1853, Malinda married Thomas S. Maxwell in Perry County, Illinois. Thomas was born December of 1813 in Tennessee. This was Thomas' second marriage. His first wife, Dorcus, died in 1852 leaving him with 2 young sons.

Martha and Thomas had one known child:
  • Mary F. - born in August of 1854 in Perry County, Illinois. Mary married John B. Craig on October 4, 1883 in Perry County, but she was a widow by the time of the 1900 census.
Martha Malinda died on January 28, 1902 in Pickneyville, Perry County, Illinois, at the age of 88 years. It is believed she is buried at the Swanwick Bethel Cemetery, since that is where her husband, Thomas, and daughter Mary and her family are buried.

Sarah Ann Woodside

The first known child of John J. and Nancy F. (Hamilton) Woodside, Sarah Ann was born on November 22, 1816 in Kentucky. She was also known as Sally or Sally Ann.

According to family sources, Sarah married David Steele Kimzey on September 28, 1841 in Livingston County, Kentucky. David was born in 1818 in Kentucky. I have not been able to find an official record of this marriage; however, David and Sally Ann Kimsey are found on the 1850 U. S. Census for Perry County, Illinois, along with 3 children.
Sarah and David had 4 known children:
  • John Alexander - born December 18, 1842 in Perry County, Illinois; died between 1920 and 1930 in Colorado. Married Tirza Wilson on April 6, 1870 in Perry County, Illinois.
  • James Padian - born November 16, 1844 in Perry County, Illinois; died October 21, 1921 in Pueblo County, Colorado. Married Anna S. Nelson about 1876 in Colorado.
  • Martha M. - born October 16, 1846 in Perry County, Illinois; death unknown. Married Hugh R. Dorough/Darrough on April 5, 1866 in Perry County.
  • Mary E. - born October 9, 1850 in Perry County, Illinois; died August 31, 1921 in Weld County, Colorado. Married Antone/Anthony Shable about 1876, possibly in Colorado.
According to family sources, Sarah died on March 24, 1870 in St. Louis, Missouri, of Smallpox. David's death is unknown.

I was not able to locate this family in the 1860 U.S. Census. The children are in the 1870 Census but not Sarah or David. If anyone has any additional information or can verify anything on Sarah and David, I would appreciate hearing from you.

Samuel C. Woodside

Born in December of 1826 in Kentucky, Samuel C. Woodside was the son of John J. Woodside and Nancy F. Hamilton. The 1850 Census shows him living in Randolph County, Illinois in the home of a Miller family. By the 1860 Census he is living in Warren County, Iowa with wife Louisa (Carpenter). They were married on May 14, 1857 in Warren County. There is also a female child named Alphrata, 5 years of age, living in the household. It is possible this child's mother was not Louisa as she was born 2 years before the marriage. However, I have not found a previous marriage for Samuel.

Census and marriage records indicate the following about Alfreda Orilla Woodside: She was born December 1854 in Iowa and married William Henry Knable on March 9, 1879 in Peoria County, Illinois. Information on her death is not known.

Samuel and Louisa had 4 known children:
  • Mary - born Oct 1863 in Iowa, death unknown.
  • Isaac Newton - born June 1866 in Illinois; died June 7, 1953 in Garland County, Arkansas. He married Phoebe E. Thirlwell in 1895 in Kansas.
  • Emma - born September 1870 in Illinois; died December 8, 1921 in Richardson County, Nebraska. She married George Edward Jones about 1895.
  • Charles Henry - born July 27, 1873 and died May 1966 in Peoria County, Illinois. He married Clara W. Mills on November 27, 1900 in Hancock County, Illinois.
By 1880 Samuel has divorced Louisa and has moved to Kansas. In 1900 he is found living in the household of Hugh Darrough in Cowley County, Kansas, and is 73 years of age. He does not appear in the 1910 Census and it is assumed he died within a short time after 1900.

Louisa has remarried to Enos G. Mack on April 23, 1879 in Peoria County, Illinois. The 2 youngest Woodside children, Emma and Charles, are living in the household of their stepfather on the 1880 Census. Louisa died September 19, 1905 in Tazewell County, Illinois.

On July 20, 1854 Patrick married Sarah C. Prowell in Crittenden County. Sarah was born January 1834 in Smith County, Tennessee. They had six known children:

James Henry Smith

James Henry was the 7th child born to Thomas Smith, Jr. and Rose (Getty) Smith. He was born in 1857 in Illinois, probably St. Clair County since that is where the family was living in the 1860 census.

According to family sources James married Jane Melinda McBride on September 19, 1878 in St. Clair County. I could not find a record of their marriage in the Illinois Statewide Marriage Index, however, James and Jane do show up on the 1880 census married and living with Rose Smith.

James and Jane had one known child - Robert James Smith, born May 31, 1882 in Illinois. Robert married Elizabeth Jane Montgomery about 1904. Robert died December 31, 1925 in Sparta, Randolph County, Illinois.

James is believed to have died in September of 1914 in St. Clair County. Wife Jane died December of 1907 in St. Clair County. This information is from family sources. I do not know where this family is buried.

If anyone has more information I would very much appreciate your getting in touch with me.

After James Green's death, Nancy married about 1880 to a Mr. Hendron (first name unknown). I could find no record of the place of this marriage; however, the 1900 census gives her name as Nancy Hendron with number of years of present marriage as 20. Also the name on her burial record is listed as Nancy Green Hendron.

Nancy (Smith) Green Hendron died on August 3, 1904 in St. Clair County, Illinois. Both Nancy and James are buried in Marissa Cemetery, in Section A, Lot 36.

Woodside-Smith Connections

My great grandfather, William Steward Woodside, married Rose Ann Lyons Smith daughter of Thomas Smith, Jr. and Mary Lyons. Previously I did postings on these ancestors and you can find them by clicking on the "Labels" for Woodside and Smith.

I have decided to now do a group of postings covering the rest of Thomas Smith, Jr.'s children, as well as any Lyons family information I have, before continuing with the next generation of Woodside.

If anyone has any information to add for my postings, including pictures of persons or tombstones, please let me know by emailing me through the "About Me" section. I always enjoy meeting new cousins.

Dear readers and researchers:

My apologies for not having posted lately. I recently became a grandmother for the first time, at an age when many women are becoming great grandmothers. As you can guess, I have been occupied with running out of state for the birth and giving help and advice where needed.

She is a little darling, only 5 lb. 1 oz. at birth. Her name is Vivian Levi Walsh, and we are all in love with her.

I promise to post something on my Woodside family in the next few days.

Thanks for your understanding.

Jonathan Pettit, Jr. is the fourth son of my 4th Great Grandparents, Jonathan and Susanna (DePue) Pettit. He was born about 1802 in Randolph County, Illinois. Not much is known about Jonathan, Jr. other than what is written below.

He married Isabella Franklin on April 30, 1823 in Randolph County, Illinois. Isabella's parents are believed to be George Edmund Franklin and Jane Heard. She was born about 1805 in Illinois.
