Jonathan Pettit, Jr.

Jonathan Pettit, Jr. is the fourth son of my 4th Great Grandparents, Jonathan and Susanna (DePue) Pettit. He was born about 1802 in Randolph County, Illinois. Not much is known about Jonathan, Jr. other than what is written below.

He married Isabella Franklin on April 30, 1823 in Randolph County, Illinois. Isabella's parents are believed to be George Edmund Franklin and Jane Heard. She was born about 1805 in Illinois.

Jonathan and Isabella had three children, according to family sources: Franklin, William, and Eliza Jane. Nothing more is known about these children.

Jonathan died July 16, 1851 in Perry County, Illinois according to family sources, and Isabella died about 1872. It is not known where they are buried.

If anyone has more information, or can verify any of this information, I would appreciate hearing from you.

Hi, my name is Tim Hall. I'm a descendant of George Edmund Franklin.

Some web sites indicate Jonathan Pettit Jr. died 16 Jul 1851 in Perry Co, IL, but this must be incorrect. I believe some people have confused Jonathan Pettit with John Pettit.

Minnesota County History name index shows Jonathan Pettit purchasing a plat of land in section 35, Wells, Rice, MN in 1860.

Notes from a distant cousin of mine who has researched this side of the family: "They lived next to Geo and Jane Franklin in Ilinois and went to Wisconsin at the same time. For some reason the Pettits moved on to Rice Co, MN. Their son Geo Franklin Pettit served in the Civil War and while they were in MN he had six children die. I am not positive where Jonathan died, but think it was in MN because Geo Franklin and family with his mother Isabella Franklin Pettit moved back to Randolph Co, IL after the war. Isabella is buried at DuQouin, IL."

I suppose one can never be sure, but I believe the above to be true.

I just arrived in Dodgeville, WI. Jane Franklin's grave was recently found at the Wyoming Valley cemetery near here. I plan to head out that way and see if I can find George and Jane's graves. Maybe I'll find some Pettits too.

Best,
Tim
