Samuel Cunningham Woodside II

Samuel Cunningham Woodside II was born March 31, 1784 in Chester District, South Carolina, to Samuel Cunningham Woodside and Jane/Jennette (Morrow?). His family moved to Kentucky where he is believed to have served for one month with Capt. John Tolley's Co. in the War of 1812.

He married Sarah J. Baugher on June 22, 1813 in Livingston County, Kentucky. In the Spring of 1829 the family moved to the Coulterville area of Randolph County, Illinois, where Samuel continued his farming. According to Portrait and Biographical record of Randolph, Jackson, Perry and Monroe Counties, Illinois, the biographical sketch of his son, John J. Woodside, states that he was a member of the Covenanter Presbyterian Church.

Samuel and Sarah had 7 known children:
  • Martha - born about 1814 in South Carolina. Believed to have married Isaac Newton Franklin, but I have found no proof of this.
  • John J. - born August 11, 1816, in Livingston County, Kentucky; died December 8, 1894, in Randolph County, Illinois. He married Mary Ann Burns, daughter of Samuel Burns of South Carolina, about 1834 in Illinois. Both are buried in the Caledonia Cemetery, Sparta, Randolph County, Illinois.
  • Robert H. - born 1818 in Kentucky; died June 25, 1898, in Randolph County, Illinois. He married Sarah Miller about 1845. Sarah was born October 27, 1823 in Pennsylvania, and died July 25, 1902 in Randolph County, Illinois. They had 1 child, Sarah M., born September 11, 1855 and died October 2, 1855, in Illinois. All are buried in the Coulterville Cemetery.
  • Samuel - born about 1819 in Kentucky. Married Jane M. (surname unknown) about 1846, place unknown. Both died sometime after the 1900 U.S. Census for Randolph County, Illinois.
  • William H. - born about 1822 in Kentucky. Nothing more is known.
  • Sarah J. - born about 1826 in Kentucky. Nothing more is known.
  • James - born August 1829 in Illinois. Married Margaret (surname unknown) about 1863, place unknown. Margaret died sometime between 1888 and 1900. James died sometime after the June 1900 U.S. Census for Randolph County, Illinois.
Samuel died November 14, 1868 in Coulterville, Randolph County. Sarah died July 5, 1879 in Grand Cote Precinct, Perry County. Both are buried in the Coulterville City Cemetery.

John J. Woodside died December 29, 1855 and is buried in the Coulterville Cemetery. His wife, Nancy, died in 1869 at 75 years of age. Robert Newton Woodside

The 10th child of Robert H. and Ann (Hill) Woodside, Robert Newton was born February 14, 1821 in Kentucky, according to The Family of Samuel Woodside by Robin Gadbury, 1996 edition.

He married Julina Ann Hill in September 1842 in Crittenden County, Kentucky. Julina was born in 1823, Livingston County, Kentucky, to Andrew and Janet (McCallister) Hill.

Their marriage was short-lived as Robert died August 8, 1844, in Perry County, Illinois. It is unknown where Robert Newton is buried.

Robert died intestate. Administration of the estate by Ephraim R. Kimsey was approved on September 30, 1844, since his widow, Julina, and his father, Robert, relinquished their right to administer.

Robert and Julina had one child:
  • Robert N. - born about 1844-1845 in Perry County, Illinois.
Julina and son Robert appear in the 1850 Census for Crittenden County, living with her parents. Julina remarried on November 21, 1855 to George Green in Crittenden County, Kentucky, and Robert N. Woodsides, age 15, appears on the 1860 Census with George and Julina A. Green.

Robert N. does not appear in the 1870 Census, or at least I could not find him anywhere. Nothing more is known about Robert. If anyone has additional information, I would very much appreciate hearing from you.
