Martha C. Woodside

Martha C. Woodside was born May 23, 1817 in Kentucky, the 9th child of Robert H. and Ann (Hill) Woodside. On July 3, 1848 she married Joseph G. McKee in Perry County, Illinois. Joseph G. McKee, son of Alexander McKee, was born in Ireland about 1807.

Martha and Joseph McKee had one child:
  • Robert W. - born 1855 in Randolph County, Illinois; died between 1920-1930. Robert married Ella Ida Jones on December 23, 1890 in Perry County, Illinois, and had 5 children: Martha A., Robert Earl, Ivan J., Leona, and Pearl.
Martha died sometime after 1882. Joseph died February 11, 1884 in Sparta, Randolph County, Illinois.

Joseph G. McKee was married before, but his first wife's name is unknown. This first marriage produced 3 known children:
  • Mary Jane - born about 1838 in Illinois, died 1883 in Hopkins County, Texas; married Ananias J. Booth August 10, 1858 in Randolph County, Illinois.
  • George D. - born about 1839 and died January 16, 1870 in Illinois. He married Mary Jane Anderson on March 17, 1868 in Perry County.
  • Joseph A. - born about 1843 and died February 15, 1863 in Illinois.
(NOTE: This is a correction to what I previously had written. I had listed the above 3 children as Martha's, which obviously was incorrect since she did not marry Joseph until 1848. Many thanks to Pamela Treme for bringing this to my attention.)

If anyone has more information on this family I would appreciate hearing from you.

Martha J. Woodside

Martha J. Woodside was born on February 11, 1857 in Grand Cote, Perry County, Illinois, to John Morrow Woodside and Lucinda Eveline (Pettit).

On March 14, 1872, Martha was married to William L. Penninger in Perry County. The marriage license was signed by J. C. Elliott. Martha and William had one child, a son, James A. Penninger. James was born July 8, 1873 and died August 10, 1873 in Perry County.

Martha died a short time later on August 14, 1873, at the young age of 16 years, 6 months, 9 days. Cause of death was "confinement and dierea" with a duration of 6 weeks. It would appear that Martha's death was due to complications from childbirth, although the death certificate does not state that.

The obituary for Martha in the DuQuoin Tribune of August 21, 1873 is very brief:

The wife of Wm. Penninger of Swanwick, died on Thursday last, after a severe and lingering illness.

Martha and son James are buried at the Swanwick Bethel Cemetery, Perry County, Illinois.

Ephriam Milton Woodside

Ephriam Milton Woodside, son of John Morrow Woodside and Lucinda Eveline (Pettit), was born on April 9, 1848, in Perry County, Illinois. Various records spell his name as Ephriam and Ephraim.

On June 5, 1873, Ephriam married Elizabeth Jane Hunt in Crittenden County, Kentucky. They had a family of 7 known children:
  • Agnes Ann - birth and death unknown.*
  • John Wiseman - born April 30, 1874 in Crittenden County, Kentucky, died April 14, 1942 in Los Angeles County, California. John married Ophelia Emma McEuen around 1896, possibly in Kentucky.
  • Jane Eveline - born October 13, 1875, Crittenden County, Kentucky. No more is known.
  • Hannah Bell - born October 23, 1877, in Kentucky (also known as Annabel or Belle). Married Richard Wilson about 1899, according to the 1900 census for Marion, Crittenden County, Kentucky.
  • Mary Ellen - born July 1880/81, Crittenden County, Kentucky, died between 1904-1910; married John R. Quertermous on February 22, 1899 in Crittenden County.
  • Leona A. - born November 1883 in Kentucky, according to the 1900 census for Marion, Crittenden County, Kentucky.
  • Flora Ellen - born July 19, 1889.* Nothing more is known.
*Information received from family sources.

I do not know when or where Ephriam died, but he obviously was still living in 1888 if Flora Ellen's birth date is correct. His wife, Elizabeth, died February 8, 1928 in LaVerne, Los Angeles County, California, and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery according to family sources.

Thomas Pressley Woodside

Thomas Pressley Woodside, son of John Morrow Woodside and Lucinda Eveline (Pettit), was born in 1846 in Perry County, Illinois. According to The Family of Samuel Woodside by Robin Gadbury, he was baptised on November 15, 1846 at Hopewell Presbyterian Church in Perry County.

He enlisted in the Civil War as a Private in the Union Army on March 24, 1865 and served in Company C, 81st Infantry Regiment of Illinois. Later Thomas was transferred to the 58th Regiment, Company B. On March 23, 1866 he was mustered out of the army.

Thomas married Eliza J. Rosan on June 17, 1869 in Jackson County, Illinois, daughter of James and Rachel Rosan. Eliza was born in 1850 in Ohio. Thomas and Eliza had 2 known children:
  • Sarah Catherine - born about 1873 in Perry County, died May 1880 in Carbondale, Jackson County, Illinois.
  • Thomas Pressley, Jr. - born about 1875 in Perry County. No more is known at this time.
Thomas Pressley Woodside, Sr. died on March 31, 1876 in Swanwick, Perry County, and is buried in the Swanwick Bethel Cemetery.

After her husband's death, Eliza may have married a James Luna in Perry County. There is a listing in the Illinois Statewide Marriage Index, 1763-1900 showing an Eliza J. Woodside as Bride and a James M. Luna as Groom, on July 4, 1885. However, I have not proved that this is Mrs. Eliza J. Woodside.

Joseph Thompson Woodside

Joseph Thompson Woodside was born about 1842 in Perry County, Illinois, to John Morrow Woodside and Lucinda Eveline (Pettit). He worked on his family's farm along with his brothers.

At 22 years of age he married Mary E. Abrams of Bond County. The marriage took place on March 10, 1864 in Bond County, and was performed by James Cox, Minister of the Gospel. Mary was born about 1848 in Missouri to John and Mary Abrams.

Joseph and Mary had 5 known children:
  • John A. - born between 1866-1867 in Illinois. No more is known.

Howard is listed as a Widow in the 1920 census in Jackson, Missouri; however, I could not locate the family in the 1910 census. It is unknown when and where Mary died.
  • Lucinda - born April 1870 in Illinois. Married John A. Cahoon in Greenville, Bond County, Illinois on December 30, 1886. She is believed to have died between 1887 and 1893, but I have not yet located the death record.
  • Martha Jane - born March 1872 in Illinois. She married Hartman Evans (b. April 1862 Indiana) in 1888 and had 5 children in Colorado - Carrie, b. abt. 1889; Charles, b. Dec 1890; Willis, b. Aug 1896; Dorothy, b. abt. 1902; Lula, b. abt. 1904. Hartman died sometime before 1940 and Martha remarried to Walter Quincey. Martha died in Pomona, Los Angeles County, California on October 3, 1948, and is buried in the Grand View Memorial Park Cemetery.
  • Lavina - born March 2, 1878 in Fayette County, Illinois, and died September 24, 1880 in Fairview Precinct, Bond County, Illinois. She is buried in the Campground Cemetery.
Joseph Thompson Woodside died on March 10, 1886 in Greenville, Bond County, Illinois. He was killed when a tree he was cutting down fell on him. He is buried in Campground Cemetery in Bond County.

Mary (Abrams) Woodside was living with daughter Martha in Oakland, California, as of the 1920 census, and is listed as 73 years of age. She died on March 27, 1924 and is buried at Mountain View Cemetery, Piedmont, California.

When I first started this blog page I wasn't sure how I was going to set it up. In order to get the large amount of information I have on the blog, it needed to be done in a gradual manner but also in a way that made some kind of sense. Also, I wanted readers to be able to find information on a particular family without too much hunting.

Still not quite sure what I was going to do, I started with my grandfather. Looking back at the blog now I see that I have worked mostly with my direct-line Woodside ancestors. There are a few side-steps to a couple of other connecting surnames, and a couple of children's families.

Since I have applied labels to the listings, a reader can go to the LABEL sidebar and click on a surname or individual name and see all postings under that name. Therefore, I have decided to continue to add direct-line ancestors under the connecting surnames, plus start working on the children of my ancestors and their individual families.

I will continue to add comments and miscellaneous information (hopefully helpful). Plus I am thinking of adding an occasional gravestone photo, even though I have a separate blog for "Cemetery and Gravestone Photos". Let me know if you would like me to start adding some of these photos here.

Samuel Cunningham Woodside

My 4th great grandfather is Samuel Cunningham Woodside who was born about 1734 in Northern Ireland. His father is believed to be John Woodside, born about 1700 in Londonderry, but I have no proof of this.

Samuel Cunningham married Jane in Ireland about 1752 and had 2 children. He emigrated with his wife and children from Ireland to Charles Town, South Carolina on the ship Nancy (Captain Hannah Commander), about 1767. It is believed the younger child died at sea, since only Samuel, Jane and daughter Mary are listed in "A Compilation of the Original Lists of Protestant Immigrants to South Carolina 1763-1773" by Janie Revill. His wife and daughter died shortly after in South Carolina.

In October of 1768 Samuel married Jane/Jennette Morrow(?) in South Carolina. They had 11 children, all born in South Carolina. Samuel moved his family to Kentucky sometime in the late 1700s. He died in Livingston County, Kentucky on July 22, 1819. Jane and several of the children moved to Illinois in the late 1820s. Jane died in Randolph County, Illinois sometime after January 1838.

Children of Samuel Cunningham and Jane (Morrow) Woodside:
  • Mary - b. August 1770 in South Carolina, death unknown; married William Herron February 18, 1819 in Livingston County, Kentucky
  • Robert H. - b. February 1772 in Chester County, South Carolina, d. December 1846 in Perry County, Illinois. Married Ann Hill July 4, 1799 in Livingston County, Kentucky
  • David - b. August 1773 in South Carolina, died in Kentucky
  • Martha - b. December 1775 in South Carolina, death unknown
  • Agnes - b. July 1779 in South Carolina, death unknown
  • John J. - b. June 5, 1782 in South Carolina, d. December 29, 1855 in Randolph County, Illinois. Married Nancy F. Hamilton December 7, 1813 in Livingston County, Kentucky
  • Samuel Cunningham II - b. March 31, 1784 in Chester County, South Carolina, d. November 1, 1868 in Randolph County. Married Sarah J. Baugher June 22, 1813 in Livingston County, Kentucky
  • James - b. February 17, 1786 in Chester County, South Carolina, d. September 1834 in Perry County, Illinois. Married Ann Brown February 14, 1811 in Caldwell County, Kentucky
  • Sarah - b. March 1788 in South Carolina, death unknown
  • Elizabeth - b. December 1790 in South Carolina, death unknown; married Anthony L. Hamilton September 11, 1810 in Livingston County, Kentucky
  • William - birth and death unknown

James Lyons

James Lyons, brother of Mary Lyons who married Thomas Smith, Sr., was born May 31, 1777 in Northern Ireland. He married Jane Elder about 1802 in Ireland where they had 2 known children. James and his family emigrated from Ireland in 1805.

Upon arrival in the United States, James settled his family in South Carolina where 6 more children were born. They later moved to St. Clair County, Illinois. His wife, Jane, died on August 9, 1852 in Marissa, St. Clair County, and is buried in the Old Salem Cemetery, Washington County, Illinois. James died on September 22, 1866 in Marissa, St. Clair County, and is also buried in the Old Salem Cemetery.

Children of James and Jane:
  • Mary - b. Aug 1803 in Ireland, d. about Sept 20 1890 in St. Clair County, Illinois
  • Infant - b. about 1805 in Ireland, d. 1805 at sea
  • James - b. about 1807 in South Carolina, d. July 1855 in St. Clair County, Illinois; married Nancy Elder about 1831 in South Carolina
  • George - b. Apr 1809 in South Carolina, d. Mar 1864 in Randolph County, Illinois; married Priscilla Gibson in Oct 1844. Priscilla died in June of 1849 in South Carolina. He married Mary Elder about 1852
  • John R. - b. Sept 14, 1814 in South Carolina, d. May 21, 1915 in St. Clair County, Illinois; married Mary A. McKee January 18, 1843 in Illinois
  • Robert William - b. Sept 1817 in South Carolina, d. Aug 9, 1900 in St. Clair County, Illinois; married Mary Ann Kinkead February 18, 1851 in Washington County, Illinois

Rose Getty

Rose Getty was born about 1815 in Taghey, Ballymoney, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, to Henry Getty and Mary (Brown) Getty. Rose was the 4th of 8 children born to Henry and Mary.

On October 6, 1835, Rose married Alexander Gibson in the 1st Ballymoney Presbyterian Church. They had 2 children - William born January 24, 1833, and Mary born February 9, 1837.

Rose married a second time to Thomas Smith on April 7, 1842 in St. James Presbyterian Church, Ballymoney. Rose and Thomas Smith are my great, great grandparents. They had a total of 7 children, 4 born in Ireland and 3 in Illinois. Rose, Thomas and the first 4 children emigrated to the United States in 1850 on the British Ship Thomas Fielden, and settled in St. Clair County, Illinois. All the children married and died in Illinois except for an infant son who only lived a few years.

At some point in the early 1850s Rose's 2 children by her first husband emigrated to St. Clair County, Illinois, where they married. I could not locate them on the ship passenger list with their mother, so assume they emigrated separately. William Gibson died in Kansas. I do not know where Mary (Gibson) Baumann died, but all her children were born in St. Clair County.

Rose died sometime after June of 1880. According to the U. S. Census for St. Clair County, Illinois, Rose was 66 years of age; her son James Henry and his wife Jane were living with her. I do not know where she is buried, but assume she would be with her husband Thomas in the Marissa Cemetery in St. Clair County, Illinois.

Historical Sketch on Jonathan Pettit

The following has been copied from A Directory, Business Mirror, and Historical Sketches of Randolph County... by E. J. Montague, published at Alton, Ill.: Courier Steam Book and Job Printing House, 1859. Page 73.

1798 - Another addition was made to this settlement in the person of Jonathan Pettit, in the year 1798. He was a noble specimen of the pioneer class, and by his enterprising energy he became a valuable acquisition to the little colony in which he located. He erected a mill on Nine Mile creek, at the point where the Chester and Evansville road crosses that stream. Some evidences of the existence of this mill may yet be found. Pettit was an active, industrious man, full of life and energy. Like most of the brave pioneers, he joined the "Rangers" in 1812, and discharged his military duties in a manner very creditable to himself and the service. His sons were David, Henry, Jonathan, and Joseph. The only one of the name of this family remaining in the county is Henry Newton Pettit, who lives about five miles northwest of Chester.

Jonathan Pettit

My 4th great grandfather was Jonathan Pettit who was born about 1766 in New Jersey. He married Susanna DuPue (or DePue) between 1791-1792 in Sussex, New Jersey, where they had 3 known children. In 1798 Jonathan moved his family to the Kaskaskia area of Randolph County, Illinois, and added 6 more children to his family.

Children of Jonathan and Susanna Pettit:
  • David Pettit, born abt. 1793 in Sussex, New Jersey; married Levina Roper November 14, 1814 in Randolph County, Illinois. Death date and place unknown.
  • Henry Newton Pettit, born March 12, 1795 in Sussex, New Jersey; married Elizabeth Heard on February 5, 1818 in Randolph County, Illinois; died November 19, 1834 in Randolph County.
  • Joseph Pettit, born abt. 1797 in New Jersey; married Louvinia Rupert September 19, 1822 in Randolph County, Illinois; died abt. 1825 in Randolph County.
  • Miss Pettit, born abt. 1800 in Randolph County, Illinois. Nothing more is known.
  • Jonathan Pettit, Jr., born abt. 1802 in Kaskaskia, Randolph County, Illinois; married Isabella Franklin May 1, 1823 in Randolph County; died July 16, 1851 in Perry County, Illinois.
  • John D. Pettit, born September 14, 1806 in Randolph County, Illinois; married Henrietta E. Douglas September 21, 1848 in Perry County, Illinois; died September 21, 1852 in Perry County.
  • Thomas Pettit, born November 30, 1808 in Kaskaskia, Randolph County, Illinois; married Eliza Franklin February 24, 1831 in Perry County, Illinois; died June 24, 1876 in Red Oak, Montgomery, Iowa.
  • Samuel Pettit, born abt. 1812 in Randolph County, Illinois, died in Alexandria, Louisiana, date unknown.
  • Miss Pettit, born abt 1815 in Randolph County, Illinois. Nothing more is known.
Jonathan Pettit died in December of 1821 in Kaskaskia, Randolph County, Illinois. His wife, Susanna, lived until about 1830 and died in Randolph County.

Much of the information I have on the early Pettit families came from Pettit family members. I am grateful to them for sharing their information, which allowed me to further my research.

Lucinda Eveline Woodside

Lucinda Eveline, the youngest child of John Morrow Woodside and Lucinda Eveline Pettit, was born December 25, 1860, in Illinois, according to the 1900 U.S. census. Having had the actual day listed on the census is very unusual. Normally there is only a month and year. She appears to have been named after her mother.

On September 28, 1882, Lucinda was united in marriage with Robert Henry Warnock in Perry County, Illinois. The information on the "Return of a Marriage to County Clerk" states Robert was a farmer residing at Preston, Randolph Co., 27 years of age, born in Ireland to James Warnock and Catharine Hart. They were "married at bride's mother's near Swanwick in the County of Perry". Witnesses to the marriage were Wm. S. Woodside and Joseph T. Craig. The minister was James C. Elliott.

Lucinda and Robert had one known child, a daughter named Ida Mae born November 27, 1880. Ida Mae married on August 20, 1902 in Randolph County to Robert S. Adams. Ida Mae and Robert had 4 children I am aware of, all born in Randolph County:
  • Mabel H., a daughter, born abt. 1903
  • Myron P., a son, born abt. 1905
  • Carolyn E., a daughter, born abt. 1907
  • Carl, a son, born 1916
Lucinda Eveline Warnock is believed to have died March 31, 1901 in Randolph County.

John Morrow Woodside

My great great grandfather John Morrow Woodside was the 2nd son and 7th child of Robert H. Woodside and Ann Hill. He was born July 6, 1812 in Livingston County, Kentucky. In 1829 John moved to Perry County, Illinois with his parents and siblings.

On December 10, 1835, John married Lucinda Eveline Pettit in Pinckneyville, Perry County where they had 14 children:

Luvisa/Louisa Ann, born 1836, died 1881; Robert N., born 1838, died (?); Rachel, born 1840, died 1859; Joseph Thompson, born 1842, died 1886; David James, born abt. 1844, died abt. 1881; Thomas Pressley, born 1846, died 1876; Ephriam Milton, born 1848, died (?); John C., born 1849, died 1851; James M., born 1852, died 1878; William Steward (my great grandfather), born 1853, died 1919 in Arkansas; Martha J., born 1857, died 1873; Lucinda Eveline, born 1860, died 1901; John A., birth and death unknown; Jonathan D. birth and death unknown.

John was a farmer most of his life. According to the 1870 Federal Agricultural Census, he grew winter wheat, rye, oats, indian corn; raised sheep and swine, and kept several milking cows along with a few other working farm animals; and produced wool, hay, butter and molasses. In the late 1840s John took over a store and post office previously run by J. C. Steele in Grand Cote, Perry County.

John died in January of 1880 and is buried in the Swanwick Cemetery in Perry County. His wife, Lucinda, stayed in Grand Cote for a while after his death, but eventually moved to Kentucky where she died in 1887.

Vol. 1, Page 84 - Bethel Cemetery (located S. of Highway 13 near Swanwick) Twsp 4-4 Sec. 22

On March 23, 1850 John M. Woodside and his wife deeded six acres of land to the trustees of the Bethel Associate Presbyterian Church for a church and burying ground.

The earliest grave is believed to be that of Jane Dermond, born in Ireland, who died May 16, 1850 and was the wife of John Dermond. The Bethel Cemetery contains the graves of servicemen from the Black Hawk War to the Viet Nam War.

In the first quarter of the 20th century, the church removed to Swanwick and the cemetery was let to fall into neglect. In 1936 a successful cemetery benefit picnic was held, and it has become an annual event. In May 1948 a public hearing was held to form a cemtery association. In September 25, 1948 the Swanwick Bethel Cemetery Association was legally organized. In 1972 an irrevocable trust was set up to provide funds indefinitely.

Thomas Smith, Jr.

My great great grandfather, Thomas Smith, Jr., was born 1811 in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, to Thomas Smith and Mary Lyons. He married Rose (Getty) Gibson on April 7, 1842 in St. James Presbyterian Church, Ballymoney, County Antrim. They had 4 known children in Ireland: Nancy, Jeanette, Elizabeth, and Sarah.

Thomas emigrated with his family from Ireland to the United States via Liverpool, England, on the British Ship Thomas Fielden. They arrived in the United States at the Port of New Orleans on February 7, 1851. From there they traveled to Marissa, St. Clair County, Illinois, and settled into the life of farming. Thomas and Rose increased their family by 3 more children: a baby whose name is unknown, Roseann, and James.

Based on a letter written by Thomas to family back in Ireland, the surname was also spelled Smyth, as that is how he signed the letter.

Thomas died in November of 1879 at the age of 69 years. He is buried in the Marissa Cemetery. In his Will he left to his son, James Henry Smith, a team of horses, a two horse waggon, a combined Champion Reaper and Mower, a Gandlach drill, 4 hogs, and all his corn, fodder, hay and oats.

His wife, Rose, was still alive in June of 1880 living with son James and his wife. It does not say so in the Will, but I would assume Thomas' estate was left to son James so he could take care of his mother.

All of Thomas' children married and raised families in St. Clair, Perry, and Randolph Counties of Illinois.

Pearl Lillian Woodside

I remember when I was a teenager (boy, that was a long time ago) my mother mentioned she had a cousin Pearl who lived in New York. At the time I thought Pearl was quite a strange name to give someone and don't remember anyone else in the family having such a name. Many years later when I started 'doing' genealogy I discovered who Pearl was.

As mentioned in an earlier post, my grandfather's brother, William J. Woodside, married in Buffalo, New York to Lillie Barber Samcoe. After checking various census records I discovered they had four children and one was named Pearl Lillian Woodside.

Pearl was born July 29, 1908 in Buffalo, New York. She married on June 4, 1928 to Charles O. Bauld, son of Charles and Caroline Bauld. Pearl and Charles, along with their two sons Raye and Don, lived near her parents in Buffalo until about 1943, at which time they moved to St. Petersburg, Florida (except for Raye, who stayed in Buffalo until 1957). Pearl lived in Florida until she died at 81 years of age on May 8, 1990. Her husband, Charles, preceded her in death on October 15, 1969.

Where Did She Go?

ANNIE WOODSIDE was born December 12, 1880, in Grand Cote, Perry County, Illinois. She was the third child of William Steward Woodside and Rose Ann Lyons Smith. Annie appears in the 1900 U. S. Census in Rosiclare, Hardin County, Illinois, along with her father and his third wife, Mary. However, she does not appear in the 1910 census in Poinsett County, Arkansas, where her father was then living.

Did Annie move to Arkansas with her father and then move on again before the 1910 census? Did she stay in Illinois and perhaps marry? Did she die, either in Illinois or Arkansas, or somewhere else? So far I have not found any record of Annie beyond 1900. If anyone who reads this has any information on Annie, please let me know. This is a puzzle I would like to solve.

An additional note: While Annie is listed in the 1910 census with a birth date of January 1883, this apparently is incorrect. Birth records for 1878-1916, Perry County, Illinois, indicate William Woodside and Rose A. L. Woodside (Smith), had child #3, unnamed female, on December 12, 1880.

William J. Woodside

The second son of William Steward Woodside and Rose Ann Lyons Smith, William J. was born on January 23, 1879 in Perry County, Illinois.

He enlisted in the U.S. Infantry at Evansville, Indiana in November of 1901, serving in the Spanish-American War. The enlistment papers say he was 5 ft. 9-1/4 inches, with blue eyes, dark brown hair, and fair complexion. In March of 1902 William was assigned to Company "I" 1st Infantry stationed in Samar, Phillipine Islands. I do not know when or where he was discharged, however, he appears in Buffalo, New York directories beginning in 1906.

William married Lillie B. Samcoe on July 25, 1906. They raised 4 children in Buffalo: William J., Jr., Pearl Lillian, Edna May, and Evelyn Anna. Edna and Evelyn were twins. Lillie died in 1954 and about a year later William moved to Florida where his daughter Pearl and her family were living. In 1959 William died in Tampa, Florida and his body was sent to Buffalo to be buried beside his wife and daughter Edna.

Most of this family are buried in Elmlawn Cemetery just north of Buffalo, New York.

Genealogical Research

Researching my family tree has been a long process. I first got interested around 1975 while living in Baltimore, Maryland. There was a lecture being given at the Maryland Historical Society on genealogy and, since I had some question on my maternal ancestors, I decided to see what I could learn. The course included reading The Researcher's Guide to American Genealogy by Val D. Greenwood - a great book loaded with all kinds of helpful information.

At that time most research was done in person at court houses, libraries, the National Archives in Washington, D.C., visiting cemeteries, etc. and involved going through heavy ledger books and reading lots of books or microfilm. Tedious, time consuming work. But if you found some information it made the work all worth while. I even considered it fun (silly me). Today the computer provides many databases and indexes online allowing much of the work to be done at home. There are times, however, when you still need to get out there and visit those court houses, libraries, archives, and cemeteries. I actually like this part the best.

Don't forget to check out web sites for the various states, counties, and genealogical societies in your areas of interest. And leave queries on their message boards, if they have them.

A word of advice when using other people's genealogical research information - check out the sources. While I use primary and secondary sources for my information, many people put information on line that they have picked up from other people with no idea where that information came from. Since there are many common given and surnames, it is a BIG mistake to just accept any information found without checking it out yourself. I suggest you do this with any information you find on my blogs as well, as I could have made a mis-step somewhere along the line.

Rose Ann Lyons Smith

While Rose Ann's parents and 4 of her siblings were born in County Antrim, Ireland, Rose Ann was born in Marissa, St. Clair County, Illinois about March of 1855. Her parents were Thomas Smith, Jr. and Rose (Getty) Gibson.

Rose Ann married William Steward Woodside on February 3, 1876, in Swanwick, Perry County, Illinois. They spent most of their married life farming in Perry County where Rose Ann gave birth to 2 sons and 1 daughter: John Thomas, William J., and Annie. Sometime between 1881 and 1886 they moved to Greenville, Bond County, Illinois. Rose Ann gave birth to her 4th child, an unnamed son, on June 18, 1886. Rose Ann died shortly after the birth of her son. The cause of death is listed as "childbirth", 35 hours. According to the death record, she was moved to St. Clair for burial. I have not yet found the grave but believe she is probably buried with her Smith family.

John Thomas Woodside

John Thomas Woodside, son of William Steward Woodside and Rose Ann Lyons Smith, was born in Swanwick, Perry County, Illinois on June 15, 1877. He enlisted in the Army on July 21, 1899 at Evansville, Indiana, with Company F, 3rd Regiment, U.S. Infantry. He was honorably discharged July 20, 1902 at Presidio, San Francisco, California, with the rank of Sergeant.

He married Ida May Williams on October 5, 1905 in San Francisco where they remained until shortly after the 1906 earthquake. They moved to Poinsett County, Arkansas, near his father, where he returned to farming. In 1908 they had a daughter, Ida Blanche. Some time between 1910 and 1920 John moved his family to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he lived out the rest of his life.

John Thomas died on May 14, 1948, and is buried at the Beverly National Cemetery in New Jersey. His wife, Ida May died on February 15, 1959, and is buried alongside her husband.

Friday, July 20, 2007

When I discovered I had a Smith branch in my Woodside line, my first thought was 'Oh no, how will I ever find any information'. All I had was one name, no place of birth, no parents or siblings names - nothing to distinquish my Rose Ann Smith from any other Rose Ann Smith. But wait, she did have a middle name of Lyons; how many Rose Ann Lyons Smiths could there be?

Also, I knew my grandfather was born in Illinois, so that was where I started looking. I found the 1880 U.S. Census entry listing my grandfather with his parents and brother, living in Perry County, Illinois. Rose A. was shown as being born in Illinois, so now I knew where to look. I sent for and received a copy of William and Rose's marriage certificate, but it gave no additional information. All my searching was done before the wonderful age of doing genealogy research on the computer. Everything seemed to take so-o-o-o long.

To make a long story short, in the mid 1990s I saw a query on one of the Woodside message boards and wrote to the person who listed the query. Then I forgot about it. He apparently forwarded the letter on, because a couple of years later I received a letter from Illinois. The writer turned out to be a new-found cousin who had a connection to the Smith line. We were both so excited to find each other and share information. She not only helped me take the Smith line all the way back to Ireland, but she provided information on the Lyons line.

William Steward Woodside

My great grandfather, William Steward Woodside, was born about February 1853 in Swanwick, Perry County, Illinois. His parents were John Morrow Woodside and Lucinda Eveline Pettit. He married Rose Ann Lyons Smith on 3 February 1876 in Swanwick, Perry County, Illinois. He was a farmer for most of his life.

Rose Ann and William had four children:
  • John Thomas - born 15 June 1877 in Swanwick, Perry County
  • William J. - born 23 January 1879 in Perry County
  • Annie - born 12 December 1880 in Grand Cote, Perry County
  • male child - born 18 June 1886 in Greenville, Bond County
Rose Ann died shortly after giving birth to her 4th child. William remarried on 2 December 1886 at Greenville, Bond County, to Frances E. (Grimes) Pate, a widow. It is unknown at this time what happened to Frances, but William married a third time on 20 September 1888 at Smithboro, Bond County, to Mary (Kedler) Powell, a widow.

Sometime between 1900 and 1910 William and Mary, along with her 2 sons from her previous marriage, moved to Poinsett County, Arkansas. William died in 1919 in Craighead County, Arkansas.
