John Morrow Woodside

My great great grandfather John Morrow Woodside was the 2nd son and 7th child of Robert H. Woodside and Ann Hill. He was born July 6, 1812 in Livingston County, Kentucky. In 1829 John moved to Perry County, Illinois with his parents and siblings.

On December 10, 1835, John married Lucinda Eveline Pettit in Pinckneyville, Perry County where they had 14 children:

Luvisa/Louisa Ann, born 1836, died 1881; Robert N., born 1838, died (?); Rachel, born 1840, died 1859; Joseph Thompson, born 1842, died 1886; David James, born abt. 1844, died abt. 1881; Thomas Pressley, born 1846, died 1876; Ephriam Milton, born 1848, died (?); John C., born 1849, died 1851; James M., born 1852, died 1878; William Steward (my great grandfather), born 1853, died 1919 in Arkansas; Martha J., born 1857, died 1873; Lucinda Eveline, born 1860, died 1901; John A., birth and death unknown; Jonathan D. birth and death unknown.

John was a farmer most of his life. According to the 1870 Federal Agricultural Census, he grew winter wheat, rye, oats, indian corn; raised sheep and swine, and kept several milking cows along with a few other working farm animals; and produced wool, hay, butter and molasses. In the late 1840s John took over a store and post office previously run by J. C. Steele in Grand Cote, Perry County.

John died in January of 1880 and is buried in the Swanwick Cemetery in Perry County. His wife, Lucinda, stayed in Grand Cote for a while after his death, but eventually moved to Kentucky where she died in 1887.
