Bethel Cemetery, Swanwick, Perry County, Illinois

Perry County Cemeteries, Townships 4-1, 4-2, 4-3, and 4-4 (Vol 1), Townships 5-1 and 5-2 (Vol 2), Compiled by Lance Feik, September 1992, Published by Perry County Historical Society, Du Quoin, Illinois.

Vol. 1, Page 84 - Bethel Cemetery (located S. of Highway 13 near Swanwick) Twsp 4-4 Sec. 22

On March 23, 1850 John M. Woodside and his wife deeded six acres of land to the trustees of the Bethel Associate Presbyterian Church for a church and burying ground.

The earliest grave is believed to be that of Jane Dermond, born in Ireland, who died May 16, 1850 and was the wife of John Dermond. The Bethel Cemetery contains the graves of servicemen from the Black Hawk War to the Viet Nam War.

In the first quarter of the 20th century, the church removed to Swanwick and the cemetery was let to fall into neglect. In 1936 a successful cemetery benefit picnic was held, and it has become an annual event. In May 1948 a public hearing was held to form a cemtery association. In September 25, 1948 the Swanwick Bethel Cemetery Association was legally organized. In 1972 an irrevocable trust was set up to provide funds indefinitely.

Hello, Patricia.

I don't know anything about the actual church records. However, I do have a cemetery listing that I found on line and it has several Barber family members. Among them is an Isaac A. Barber, Jr., born 1866 - died 1943. There is also an Isaac Barber born Jan. 15, 1829, died Sep. 26, 1912. This may be of some help to you.

Also, if you are interested in any of the other Barber listings please write to me directly at eidw38@yahoo.com so I can respond to you directly.
