Martha J. Woodside

Martha J. Woodside was born on February 11, 1857 in Grand Cote, Perry County, Illinois, to John Morrow Woodside and Lucinda Eveline (Pettit).

On March 14, 1872, Martha was married to William L. Penninger in Perry County. The marriage license was signed by J. C. Elliott. Martha and William had one child, a son, James A. Penninger. James was born July 8, 1873 and died August 10, 1873 in Perry County.

Martha died a short time later on August 14, 1873, at the young age of 16 years, 6 months, 9 days. Cause of death was "confinement and dierea" with a duration of 6 weeks. It would appear that Martha's death was due to complications from childbirth, although the death certificate does not state that.

The obituary for Martha in the DuQuoin Tribune of August 21, 1873 is very brief:

The wife of Wm. Penninger of Swanwick, died on Thursday last, after a severe and lingering illness.

Martha and son James are buried at the Swanwick Bethel Cemetery, Perry County, Illinois.
