Rose Getty

Rose Getty was born about 1815 in Taghey, Ballymoney, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, to Henry Getty and Mary (Brown) Getty. Rose was the 4th of 8 children born to Henry and Mary.

On October 6, 1835, Rose married Alexander Gibson in the 1st Ballymoney Presbyterian Church. They had 2 children - William born January 24, 1833, and Mary born February 9, 1837.

Rose married a second time to Thomas Smith on April 7, 1842 in St. James Presbyterian Church, Ballymoney. Rose and Thomas Smith are my great, great grandparents. They had a total of 7 children, 4 born in Ireland and 3 in Illinois. Rose, Thomas and the first 4 children emigrated to the United States in 1850 on the British Ship Thomas Fielden, and settled in St. Clair County, Illinois. All the children married and died in Illinois except for an infant son who only lived a few years.

At some point in the early 1850s Rose's 2 children by her first husband emigrated to St. Clair County, Illinois, where they married. I could not locate them on the ship passenger list with their mother, so assume they emigrated separately. William Gibson died in Kansas. I do not know where Mary (Gibson) Baumann died, but all her children were born in St. Clair County.

Rose died sometime after June of 1880. According to the U. S. Census for St. Clair County, Illinois, Rose was 66 years of age; her son James Henry and his wife Jane were living with her. I do not know where she is buried, but assume she would be with her husband Thomas in the Marissa Cemetery in St. Clair County, Illinois.

Thanks for your email about the Getty line. My mother-in-law, Barbara Gibson Hofmann, is still looking for the birth year of Alexander Gibson, who married Rose Getty (It may be between 1800 and 1820). I do know when and where Alexander married Rose (1832). Ann McCormick has not given me any birth and death info after Alexander and Rose were married. She was 16 when they married. Do you happen to know the birthdate of Alexander from your research? He presumably died in Dunedin, where they were living at the time after Mary was born. She was told the records were destroyed in a fire. She will continue her search on Ancestory.com with her son (my husband). Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! Hi, Kathy.
According to the book "Ballymoney Old Church Graveyard" by Dorothy Arthur, which I recently obtained, Alexander Gibson was born in 1810 and died in 1842. It does not say where he was born.

I sent an email on Feb. 23rd to Bob giving him more information. You can reach me directly at eidw38@yahoo.com
