He enlisted in the Civil War as a Private in the Union Army on March 24, 1865 and served in Company C, 81st Infantry Regiment of Illinois. Later Thomas was transferred to the 58th Regiment, Company B. On March 23, 1866 he was mustered out of the army.
Thomas married Eliza J. Rosan on June 17, 1869 in Jackson County, Illinois, daughter of James and Rachel Rosan. Eliza was born in 1850 in Ohio. Thomas and Eliza had 2 known children:
- Sarah Catherine - born about 1873 in Perry County, died May 1880 in Carbondale, Jackson County, Illinois.
- Thomas Pressley, Jr. - born about 1875 in Perry County. No more is known at this time.
After her husband's death, Eliza may have married a James Luna in Perry County. There is a listing in the Illinois Statewide Marriage Index, 1763-1900 showing an Eliza J. Woodside as Bride and a James M. Luna as Groom, on July 4, 1885. However, I have not proved that this is Mrs. Eliza J. Woodside.
