David Pettit

David Pettit, oldest son of Jonathan Pettit and Susanna DuPue, was born abt. 1793 in Sussex, New Jersey. In the late 1790s his parents moved the family to the Kaskaskia area of Randolph County, Illinois. It was here David married Levina Raper on November 14, 1814.

David and Levina had six known children:
  • Lucinda Eveline (my great great grandmother) was born about August 1815 in Illinois and died September 1887 in Marion, Crittenden County, Kentucky. She married John Morrow Woodside (see earlier posting).
  • Susanah Manerva Pettit, born February 1818 and died July 1880 in Randolph County, Illinois. She married James C. McCormick in June of 1839.
  • Martha Jane Pettit, born January 1820 and died June 1889 in Perry County, Illinois. She married Robert John Woodside in December 1848.
  • John Mordock Rupert Pettit, born March 1824 and died abt. June 1839.
  • Mary Ann Pettit, born October 1825 in St. Clair County, Illinois. Married Isaac Jefferson Carr in August 1844.
  • Deminda Pettit, born October 1828.
David married a second time to Mary Ann Palmer on May 4, 1831 in Randolph County. It is believed his first wife died sometime after the birth of Deminda.

Nothing more is known at this time about David. It is believed he moved away from the area, possibly to Missouri.

John Morrow Woodside

My great great grandfather John Morrow Woodside was the 2nd son and 7th child of Robert H. Woodside and Ann Hill. He was born July 6, 1812 in Livingston County, Kentucky. In 1829 John moved to Perry County, Illinois with his parents and siblings.

On December 10, 1835, John married Lucinda Eveline Pettit in Pinckneyville, Perry County where they had 14 children:

Luvisa/Louisa Ann, born 1836, died 1881; Robert N., born 1838, died (?); Rachel, born 1840, died 1859; Joseph Thompson, born 1842, died 1886; David James, born abt. 1844, died abt. 1881; Thomas Pressley, born 1846, died 1876; Ephriam Milton, born 1848, died (?); John C., born 1849, died 1851; James M., born 1852, died 1878; William Steward (my great grandfather), born 1853, died 1919 in Arkansas; Martha J., born 1857, died 1873; Lucinda Eveline, born 1860, died 1901; John A., birth and death unknown; Jonathan D. birth and death unknown.

John was a farmer most of his life. According to the 1870 Federal Agricultural Census, he grew winter wheat, rye, oats, indian corn; raised sheep and swine, and kept several milking cows along with a few other working farm animals; and produced wool, hay, butter and molasses. In the late 1840s John took over a store and post office previously run by J. C. Steele in Grand Cote, Perry County.

John died in January of 1880 and is buried in the Swanwick Cemetery in Perry County. His wife, Lucinda, stayed in Grand Cote for a while after his death, but eventually moved to Kentucky where she died in 1887.

On March 23, 1850 John M. Woodside and his wife deeded six acres of land to the trustees of the Bethel Associate Presbyterian Church for a church and burying ground.

The earliest grave is believed to be that of Jane Dermond, born in Ireland, who died May 16, 1850 and was the wife of John Dermond. The Bethel Cemetery contains the graves of servicemen from the Black Hawk War to the Viet Nam War.

In the first quarter of the 20th century, the church removed to Swanwick and the cemetery was let to fall into neglect. In 1936 a successful cemetery benefit picnic was held, and it has become an annual event. In May 1948 a public hearing was held to form a cemtery association. In September 25, 1948 the Swanwick Bethel Cemetery Association was legally organized. In 1972 an irrevocable trust was set up to provide funds indefinitely.

Thomas Smith, Jr.

My great great grandfather, Thomas Smith, Jr., was born 1811 in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, to Thomas Smith and Mary Lyons. He married Rose (Getty) Gibson on April 7, 1842 in St. James Presbyterian Church, Ballymoney, County Antrim. They had 4 known children in Ireland: Nancy, Jeanette, Elizabeth, and Sarah.

Thomas emigrated with his family from Ireland to the United States via Liverpool, England, on the British Ship Thomas Fielden. They arrived in the United States at the Port of New Orleans on February 7, 1851. From there they traveled to Marissa, St. Clair County, Illinois, and settled into the life of farming. Thomas and Rose increased their family by 3 more children: a baby whose name is unknown, Roseann, and James.

Based on a letter written by Thomas to family back in Ireland, the surname was also spelled Smyth, as that is how he signed the letter.

Thomas died in November of 1879 at the age of 69 years. He is buried in the Marissa Cemetery. In his Will he left to his son, James Henry Smith, a team of horses, a two horse waggon, a combined Champion Reaper and Mower, a Gandlach drill, 4 hogs, and all his corn, fodder, hay and oats.

His wife, Rose, was still alive in June of 1880 living with son James and his wife. It does not say so in the Will, but I would assume Thomas' estate was left to son James so he could take care of his mother.

All of Thomas' children married and raised families in St. Clair, Perry, and Randolph Counties of Illinois.

Pearl Lillian Woodside

I remember when I was a teenager (boy, that was a long time ago) my mother mentioned she had a cousin Pearl who lived in New York. At the time I thought Pearl was quite a strange name to give someone and don't remember anyone else in the family having such a name. Many years later when I started 'doing' genealogy I discovered who Pearl was.

As mentioned in an earlier post, my grandfather's brother, William J. Woodside, married in Buffalo, New York to Lillie Barber Samcoe. After checking various census records I discovered they had four children and one was named Pearl Lillian Woodside.

Pearl was born July 29, 1908 in Buffalo, New York. She married on June 4, 1928 to Charles O. Bauld, son of Charles and Caroline Bauld. Pearl and Charles, along with their two sons Raye and Don, lived near her parents in Buffalo until about 1943, at which time they moved to St. Petersburg, Florida (except for Raye, who stayed in Buffalo until 1957). Pearl lived in Florida until she died at 81 years of age on May 8, 1990. Her husband, Charles, preceded her in death on October 15, 1969.

Where Did She Go?

ANNIE WOODSIDE was born December 12, 1880, in Grand Cote, Perry County, Illinois. She was the third child of William Steward Woodside and Rose Ann Lyons Smith. Annie appears in the 1900 U. S. Census in Rosiclare, Hardin County, Illinois, along with her father and his third wife, Mary. However, she does not appear in the 1910 census in Poinsett County, Arkansas, where her father was then living.

Did Annie move to Arkansas with her father and then move on again before the 1910 census? Did she stay in Illinois and perhaps marry? Did she die, either in Illinois or Arkansas, or somewhere else? So far I have not found any record of Annie beyond 1900. If anyone who reads this has any information on Annie, please let me know. This is a puzzle I would like to solve.

An additional note: While Annie is listed in the 1910 census with a birth date of January 1883, this apparently is incorrect. Birth records for 1878-1916, Perry County, Illinois, indicate William Woodside and Rose A. L. Woodside (Smith), had child #3, unnamed female, on December 12, 1880.
